Alaska Regulatory Laws
Private institutions in Alaska do not require accreditation, however those that wish to, may become accredited through the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development. Alaska
Stat.§14.07.020(10). Schools that comply with Alaska Stat.§§14.45.100 are considered exempt from state education requirements. However, state safety and health provisions still apply. Alaska Stat.§14.45.100. Schools that are not in compliance with the statute are not exempt from the education laws. Alaska Stat. §14.45.030.
Teacher certification is not required for exempt private schools, but is required for those considered non-exempt. The curriculum in private schools must be comparable to that offered and regulated b public schools in the area. Alaska Stat. §14.30.010(b)(1). The Alaska Department of Education and Early Development is responsible for prescribing regulation standards for safe and healthy conditions within private schools. Alaska Stat. §14.07.020(7). Safety drills must be conducted once a month (Alaska Stat. §14.03.140) and lockers may be searched at any time. Alaska Stat. §14.03.105. Alaska Stat.§14.45.190.
