Review for Liahona Academy

Liahona Academy is an all-boys Residential Treatment Center for boys located just outside of St. George, UT, in Hurricane, UT. They have 2 separate campuses with 48 students, boys ages 13- 18. The age cut-off is technically 9 months before the student's 18 th birthday as most Liahona students are not willing to attend and are enrolled by their parents. The cost of Liahona Academy is 9K per month and some of those costs may be offset with your health insurance policy. The program is 12-18 months in length, and it is a 5-phase level program. Liahona is a cross between a behavior modification program and a positive peer culture, using students at each of the phases in family units to help model appropriate behavior and also to help keep them accountable to the rules in the program. One of the unique things about Liahona Academy is that they still do in-person schooling with teachers and tutors on-site, and the students have no access to computers or the internet during their entire stay. They also offer medication management and unique Genesite testing to help get medications correct on
the first try. Liahona’s communication policy is often a stumbling block for parents as the first 2 to 3 months consist of a communication block where you only communicate with your student through letters until they pass the program's first level. Family therapy is 2x monthly, which is about half of most other programs that offer family therapy each week. The other thing to consider is the therapist-to-student ratio. Each therapist has about 20 students on their caseload. This is relatively high as an industry standard but they seem to work as a well-oiled machine and are very consistent with excellent communication with staff and families. Liahona, in my opinion, is a great fit for a student presenting with Oppositional Defiant Behaviors, anger management issues, familial conflict, minor substance abuse and ADD/ADHD.
